Year 1 Learning Week 1, Term 2

The children did amazingly well with their trip to St Peter’s Church especially after a long and tiring first term. We were really impressed with the knowledge that they came away with and the writing that they have done on our return. Also massive thanks to all parents who attended the Phonics Learn Along this week – we hope you found it beneficial to see what phonics looks like in school for your child. We wish all of the children a restful and well deserved half term break.

Competitions

Over half term we have 2 competitions for children to work on

Mascot competition (see the newsletter from 13th October for full details)
The winner’s design will feature on our school online safety rules and be displayed in every classroom throughout the school. We really hope you will show your support for this competition and can’t wait to see all of the designs that the children come up with! Here are just a few examples of previous entries for inspiration!

To enter:
-Children can design a mascot using any medium they wish – ICT, drawing, sticking, painting… or any other way they choose. Be creative like the ELLI unicorn!
-The competition is open to KS1 only (with the idea that we will run the competition every 2 years, so current Reception will have a chance to enter when they are in Year 2)
-Entries should be emailed or handed to your child’s teacher by the deadline of Monday 6th November.

English

Phonics

Common exception words: he she we me be was
Graphemes:  ay (play)    ou (out  )  ie  (pie)    ea  (heap)

Writing

Fireworks – The children will use learnt phonemes and graphemes to help create a wordbank about fireworks (e.g. pop, fizz, bang). They will think about what they would hear, taste and see on firework night. They will use this word bank and adjectives collected to create a simple acrostic poem.

Firework Safety- Linked to PSHE – We will research different poster styles and look at the key features of safety posters. We will then create our own to tell others how to stay safe.

Handwriting: Correctly forming graphemes and spelling of common exception words using the 4 formation families. This will be on squared paper to guide the size of letters.

Reading
We will starting group reading with the children this week and focusing on:

  • Look at front cover details and explore making predictions, using phonetic knowledge to decode unknown words and to extend vocabulary.
  • Read aloud and look at increasing fluency and use discussion as a group to discuss comprehension.
  • Continue to continue on phonic and CEW recognition gaps identified in assessments from Term 1.

Maths

This week we will be  comparing addition and subtraction number sentences using the symbols < > and =. We will also look at deriving number sentences from part-part whole models.
