Phonics: Phase 5a – Mastery

This week and next we will be completing mid-year phonics screening checks. This is to check that children are on track with their progress in Year 1 as we move towards a formal screening test (completed in term 6). We will introduce the concept of alien/ nonsense words. These are words that are made up of phonemes (sounds) they have learnt but make no sense and just need to be decoded and blended (broken down into sounds and then read together to make a word).

Focus GPCs:
ew (few)
oe (toe)
au (autumn)
ey (turkey)
tch (catch)

CEW and Keywords to read and spell: called looked like

Writing
Just as we learnt the story structure of the 3 Little Pigs last week, our focus text is Little Red Riding Hood. Throughout the week children will rehearse the story, write the story and then add their own twist to the end.

Handwriting
Following on from Mrs Gibson’s handwriting demo, a few parents have asked about which size squared paper to use at home to support handwriting. We recommend 1 centimetre squares.

Reading
Reading a range of fairy tales and looking for things that are similar and different.

Reading reminder: please support your child’s reading at home by completing daily reads and filling in their book mark for each read they complete. Thank you. Practice really does make progress.
