Year 2 Learning. Term 5, Week 1

Noticeboard – Please make sure ALL children have their PE kits in school everyday.

Week 1 – Thursday (18th April) from 3pm – Come in and share the projects we completed at the end of last term. The children will share their work on planets and climate zones.

Starting from Week 2, each class will alternate joining the Junior school whole school assembly on a Monday Morning. This will be the start of our transition activities.

May Fair, Saturday 18th May – Those who are Maypole dancing and/or in the school choir who are also performing will get more information as we move through the term. Please make sure you have kept the date free.

Whole School Cultural Enrichment Week – Week 4 -Beginning, Tuesday 7th May – more information to follow shortly on here, via email and on the newsletter.

Spelling
Session 1: Teach adding the suffix -ful and recap suffix -ing
Session 2: Teach adding the suffix -less and recap suffix -ed

Writing – Text – The Tin Forest – By Helen Ward – Week 1 – Exploration of Setting
Session 1 Explore the back of the book and the blurb. What does windswept mean? What does hope mean? Look at clues in the picture and make predictions. Pupils create their own image to match predictions and write what they think a ‘Tin Forest’ would be like.
Session 2 Read page 1 and discuss expanded noun phrases used by the author. Discuss the setting with pupils. Ask pupils to create their own grid using expanded noun phrases to add description.
Session 3 Read the next page and discuss the new information. What jobs does the old man do? Practise adding -ing to root words using different spelling rules. Read the next page about the old man’s dream forest. Write expanded noun phrases about what can be seen.
Session 4 Handwriting – Joining letters (all except in and out of letter ‘s’)

Reading
Focus:

  1. Confidently read aloud books with increasing prosody and pace.
  2. Re-read to build up fluency, confidence and prosody in word reading with noticeable depth of understanding after the first read.
  3. Read words accurately and fluently without overt sounding and blending at appropriate pace and stamina.
  4. Look at inference and comprehension during additional group reads.

Mental Oral/Warm Up:
Quick-fire doubling and halving up to 100. 
Counting in 2’s and 5’s and 10’s.

Science – Plants – Investigation. What does a plant need to grow? Thinking about what a plant needs, children to design a ‘plant needs’ experiment.
