Reception News – Term 4, Week 3

Thank you for supporting our Sports Relief day. The children enjoyed wearing their own sports clothes to school and taking part in sporting activities throughout the day. During PSHE, we have been learning about how to keep healthy. The children have discussed making healthy food choices and ways to keep healthy. The children said that in school we do the Monday mile, PE and dance to keep our bodies healthy. We also discussed that too much ice cream isn’t very healthy! In RE this week, the children have been learning about Passover.

We have continued to focus on ‘Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain’ this week. The children have learnt about the types of animals found in Africa. In classes, the children sorted the small world animals into different countries (England or Africa). We discussed why the environments in the countries would be better suited to different animals. Each child has also painted a picture of an African animal.

This week, the children have been writing fact files about their favourite African animal using their phonic knowledge. There are lots of opportunities to support your child at home with writing. You could encourage children to write menus, postcards, labels, tickets, letters, posters, shopping lists, diaries and the list goes on! The children write words, captions and sentences on their whiteboards during daily phonic season sessions. Please remember to read your child’s school book with them every day to ensure they are revising and revisiting their phoneme and blending knowledge.

During maths this week, the children have been exploring doubling. Doubling means two lots. They have enjoyed making doubles using resources (e.g. multilink cubes, numicon) and writing number sentences to match. The children have played games that encourage them to work out doubling numbers such as rolling two dice to see if they get a double.

Next week, the children will be introduced to the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and will be using this as a learning stimulus for the rest of the term. Thank you to everybody who has signed up to donate fruit to make our fruit salads! We can’t wait to try them already.
Another thank you to our mystery readers. The children are loving having stories read to them by different people.
