Year 2 News – Term 4, Week 3

Thank you so much to everyone for supporting our Sport Relief day! The children really enjoyed wearing their sports gear and were so keen to take on our fitness challenges! We were super impressed with how everyone pushed themselves during circuit training and it was so much fun joining the other year groups for aerobics on the playground. The children were very interested in the Comic Relief cause and how the money raised can help others. In KS1 Assembly we heard Cameron’s story about his experience of homelessness and thought about what it means to have a home.

We had a very special challenge in writing this week: the NW24 (our local school cluster) Writing Competition! This year, the children were given a picture as a stimulus for an original story. We used maps to plan out the four main elements of our stories: the character, the setting, the problem, and the resolution. We talked a lot about everything that we need to remember for amazing writing, from full stops to echoing other authors. WOW, what amazing results! Now the teachers have the very difficult job of selecting which stories to submit, fingers crossed for another winner this year!

In maths, we did some assessment this week to identity areas in need of a bit more work. We would appreciate everyone practising mental addition and subtraction within 100 and telling the time to the quarter hours.

This week, our whole school took part in Sing Up Day. This is a day where hundreds of schools sing the same song at the same time to unite children across the country in music. This year the song was called “There’s a Power in the Music” by composer Lin Marsh, and we have been learning it during our Singing Assemblies over they last term. The lyrics remind us that music is special because it has this power to bring people together and help us face challenges that we encounter in our lives – “Singing Lifts the spirits, heals the heart and feeds the soul”.
We did our Sing Up Day final performance on Tuesday. The School Choir joined us at the front of assembly to help us and show off the work they have been doing during their rehearsals on Monday lunchtimes. They even sang a solo verse which only they had learnt. The performance was amazing and left everyone feeling good. Well done everyone!
