Year 1 Home learning Week 2 Term 6 (beginning 8.6.20)

Hope you managed to get back into the swing of things after the break. Thanks to all who  managed to send some of your wonderful learning to your profile once again. You still manage to amaze us with your amazing learning.

This week we are going to delve deeper into our new topic of Journeys, a topic that the whole school is  working on together. Year 1 and 2 in particular will be following a lot of the same themes, allowing for consolidation of objectives or a chance to really stretch yourself further with your learning as we start to get ourselves ready for transition to Year 2 over the coming weeks. Below again is a summary of this week’s learning to act as guidance only and not a strict timetable to follow. Please continue to  work with the routines that suit your family best. We do ask though, if your child is returning to school over the coming weeks that you do not complete work from the days your child is in school as  we will be following the timetable more rigidly in school. This is with the exception of English Session 1 which is explained further below. You should see clearly the work that we are encouraging you to photo (3 pieces) to submit  into your 2 Build a Profile platform so that we can celebrate your work and give some more feedback. Work completed in school will be submitted by the teachers in the same way.  Remember that other pieces are welcome too, especially things that you are really proud of. English – Reading

Daily Reading
Carry on choosing books for reading, mixed up with games and other activities aimed at the level of your child from the Pearson site. As we have said all along, books you have at home or other sites you may also have been using are still fine too. There is also a child friendly newspaper to read as part of this week’s writing task.
First News – children’s newspaper

Daily Phonics and Spelling
We are providing a new link to phonics learning and consolidation. Choose whether you want to watch a video in its entirety or break it into parts. New videos are posted daily and older ones are listed below on the web page. The videos are so good to help maintain our core English skills. Use them as best fits with your routines. These are consolidation of taught sounds. If you feel your child is secure with these sounds then please spend more time on spelling of our Year 1 common exception words in a similar fashion to session 2 of English this week. We have included a list of the common exception words for Year 1 reading and spelling below and some word searches.

Session 1: Home view for school report
This week the first task we are going to ask you to do is to complete the home contribution to this year’s school report. Given the unusual circumstances this year we have adapted our report format and your contribution will be more important than ever! The home view is split into ‘Child’s view’ and ‘Parent’s view’. Please see the further guidance below on what to write and how to send it to us. Children in school this morning will not complete their part in school so we ask that this is done at home at an alternative time. The first session in school will be taken up with our introductions to new routines and environments.

Session 2: Spelling Year 1 Common Exception Words
Learning Objectives:
-To read and spell the Year 1 Common Exception Words.

Work through the booklet, choosing words to focus on. Complete 1 or more tasks depending on ability and time taken.
Common Exception Words Activity Booklet

Session 3: To create a word bank and  a narrative version of the story so far
Learning Objective:
-To think of key vocabulary that could be helpful in writing a story and create a narrative version
Watch the video of Mrs Fricker taking you through the first part of our key text ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker.
As you are watching, try to note down vocabulary in a word bank that might help you write the story so far. You will probably need to watch the video more than once or pause it to give you time to get your ideas down. Try to include words you could use to describe the people, places and events in part one the story. If you like you can use the template. Now create a short narrative version of the story so far. Remember to use story language. We have written the beginning of  an example along with things to focus on in case you get a bit stuck.
Reduced challenge: Can you orally narrate the story so far for a family member? Put Mrs Fricker on mute and talk along to the video.
Challenge : Can you write the story so far as a play script and act it out for your family?

Session 4: Create a Headline (and article) for a Newspaper
Learning Objectives:
-To create a headline and picture  for a newspaper report.
-Challenge: To write a newspaper report about the arrival of the little girl, including a headline and picture.

Imagine that you live in that big castle. How would you feel if a stranger suddenly appeared in your city on a magical, red boat! Write a newspaper article about the girl who arrived in the city in a red boat. Who could she be? Why is she here? Think about the headline, and make it exciting. You will need a picture to go with your article too. There are a range of templates in the resource folder or you can write it straight into your book. If you have never read a newspaper before or you are not sure what one looks like you can have a look at a child friendly one below.
Reduced Challenge: Write the headline and draw a picture for the front of your newspaper. Think about the writing style you could use to make the headline stand out.
Challenge: Write the headline and the article. You can make it as long or short as you want. Use all the ideas you have already come up with. Include a picture and get some ideas from newspapers, the school newspaper and the other resources we have provided.

Maths

Session 1:
Daily Fluency:
Complete a snappy maths mixed addition and subtraction sheet from below. Time yourself how many of these can you complete in 3 minutes? The idea is to solve them as quickly as you can and move towards recalling them so for most children the first sheet will be best (there is a harder sheet though if needed). Please note they do not need to complete the sheet but see how many they can do in the time – we will do the same next week so keep your sheet and see if you can beat your score!
Snappy maths addition and subtraction within 10
Snappy maths addition and subtraction within 20 (extension)
Then watch this video:
White rose video about counting in 2s
Optional: Choose activities relating to counting in 2s suggested below:
– Write numbers counting in 2s (how far can you get?!)
– Find objects around your house (or collect things while out on walk) to arrange into groups of 2 to practise counting in 2s.
– Take it in turns with someone to say a number while counting in 2s
Order number cards counting in 2s.
Splat square– splat the numbers counting in 2s and discuss the patterns that you see (which digits change/stay the same?).

Session 2:
Daily Fluency:

Practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and a slide at the beginning of the main task to complete (please pause the video as needed).
Main:
Learning Objectives:

-To solve practical problems by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Choose 1 of the 2 White Rose videos below that best suits what you need to practise (Please note counting in 10s is the priority, however if they are solid on this then look at the 5s video). Then complete the sheet by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
White rose video about counting in 10s.
White rose video about counting in 5s.
Counting in 2’s, 5s and 10s sheet – complete this sheet to practise spotting patterns counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Extra challenge: optional extra challenge on the 2nd page of the sheet (just cut it off if you don’t want to use it)

Session 3:
Daily Fluency:
Slide at the beginning of the main task to complete (please pause the video as needed).
Main:
Learning Objectives:
– to represent arrays as repeated addition.
– to count in 2s, 5s and 10s to efficiently count how many objects in an array.
Powerpoint to work through recapping arrays as repeated addition, but focusing on counting them efficiently in 2s, 5s or 10s to solve.
Arrays Sheet applying counting in 2s, 5s and 10s – follows on from the powerpoint
Extra challenge (optional): Sheet have a go at drawing your own arrays
Super extra challenge (optional): Problem solving task

Session 4:
Daily Fluency:
Slide at the beginning of the main task to complete (please pause the video as needed).
Main:
Learning Objectives:

– To know that double is the same number or amount twice and solve these.
– Begin to recall some doubles facts (doubling the numbers 0 to 10, e.g. double 6 is 12)
White rose video on doubling – Please try to help the children link doubling to repeated addition. Doubling is the same amount twice and we can represent as a repeated addition.
Sheet on doubling

Session 5:
Daily Fluency: Lots of options ways to work on recall of doubles facts listed below.
Learning Objectives:
– Begin to recall some doubles facts (doubling the numbers 0 to 10, e.g. double 6 is 12)

  • Choose 1 of these 2 games (Hit the button requires recall of the doubles, Archery game has a visual if needed so is a bit easier):
  • Doubles cards to print (you either use to play snap or spread the cards out to play pairs) – or better yet make your own version that are a bit more colourful!
  • Use numbergym to explore games of your choice on other skills needing consolidating!
  • Super extra challenge (optional): Doubling Fives investigation – this is quite complicated but a good option if your child is really solid on their recall of doubles, but will need to be discussed together still.

Topic

Session 1: PSHE
Learning objectives:
I can say how I feel
–  I can be kind
–   I can remember good things to help me be hopeful for the future

Feelings wheel. Print off a feelings wheel and stick it onto card. Colour each face. Cut out the arrow and attach it to the centre with a split pin. Point the arrow to how you’re feeling today. Talk about how you feel.

Kindness challenge:
Read the Starfish story.
Make a list of things you could do to be kind this week. Maybe sharing your toys with your brother or sister; or tidying up your things; or being helpful for Mum or Dad; or reading someone a story; or sending someone a card … what else can you think of?
Your challenge is to colour in a starfish each time you do something kind. How many can you colour in this week?

Treasuring memories:
Complete the Lockdown reflections worksheet and talk about things you’ve done.

If you are coming back to school, you might want to complete a Back to school wellbeing sheet (scroll down for a simpler version if you want to do pictures).

Make a memories treasure chest by decorating a box. You could paint it, stick coloured paper on or add buttons, sequins or decorations of your choice. If you haven’t got a box, you could make a zig-zag scrap book and decorate the cover.

Talk about happy things you can remember about this coronavirus time. Put something in your treasure chest for each one – you could draw or write it on a small piece of paper; or find a small object to remind you. If you’re making a zig-zag book, you could add photos or draw pictures.

Feel warm and happy about each good thing as you place it in the box (or stick or draw it in the zig-zag book.) Good things have happened, so you can be hopeful that more good things will happen in the future too.

Session 2: Science
Learning Objectives:
I can describe and compare the observable features of animals from a range of groups [Option 1] mammals, reptiles etc
-I can describe the main changes as young animals, including humans, grow into adults [Option 2]
-I can relate to the idea that all animals are on a lifelong journey
Sessions Below… Option 1 is for everyone. Option 2 is for all Yr 2 children and Yr 1 children who want to have a taste of Yr2 challenges.

Option 1:
Powerpoint: Animal groups and life long journeys. We will be  looking at mammals, fish, insects, birds, reptiles and amphibians. This will be a refresher for some and new material for other children. Thinking about the different groups of animals can you take on the Grouping Challenge?
Option 1 Extra challenge: You could watch Andy’s Animal Adventures (Cbeebies) and talk about the groups that animals belong to.
Option 2:
Staying with the powerpoint Option 2; Connecting to our Term 6 topic of Journeys…
We are thinking about animals and their life long journeys or ‘Life Cycles’. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zxcmp39 Can you pick two animals from the different groups to research life cycles? Can you draw or write what you have discovered about their life long journeys?
Option 2 Extra Challenge: Can you talk how you will change as you continue on your life long journey?
Fun challenges: If you have soft toy animals or model animals at home can you say which group they are in? Can you move like different animals (you must be able to say what group they are in!)? Can you act out an animal life-cycle too?

Session 3: Computing links with Science
Learning Objectives:
I can use technology to complete an animal drawing.
-I can use technology purposefully to manipulate and store digital content.

-I know how to get help and support if I need it.
On the Purple Mash homepage choose Art. Next look at Paint Projects and choose Animals.
Option 1: Your Challenge is to use and develop your own computer skills to complete pictures of animals. Add the name of the animal to your picture. To Save please use your name and the name of the animal eg Charlie fish. Save in HIS folder. Do as many as you like.
Option 2: Add  more information in the label. Can you write the type of animal it is? Please include any other writing you like. If you cannot remember the log in please contact your teacher.
Please ensure that your child uses online material safely and knows how to turn the screen off or fetch you if they accidentally click on anything other than Purple Mash.

Session 4: Music
Learning Objective:
I can understand and explore how music is created through tempo, dynamics and pitch.
Soundtracks and emotions music – Follow this powerpoint presentation, thinking about how music can change your emotions. Then listen to the first 30 secs of the clips below with your eyes closed and discuss any emotions it may make you feel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX3bN5YeiQs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bzWSJG93P8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqog63KOANc

Discuss how tempo (speed) or dynamics (how loud or quiet it was) of the music can affect how you felt. Introduce pitch.

Task: Create a soundtrack to your journey. It should last 30 secs to 1 min and can be hummed or played using any kind of instrument. Percussion instruments work very well for this kind of music. You could try body percussion or create your own instrument like maracas with dried rice in a container or drums with a wooden spoon and the table.
Challenge: Write a sentence describing your soundtrack using the specific musical terms tempo, dynamics and pitch.

Session 5: Explore and Challenge.
Please use this afternoon to finish off work from earlier in the week, or to take on any challenges you didn’t have time to do, or to follow your own ideas and learn as you play.

PE- Physical Exercise and Skills Ideas
Please continue with some physical activity before starting to learn because it helps us to settle and focus. There are lots of on-line resources such as Joe Wicks, Cosmic Kids Yoga or a wake and shake dance or you can start to make up your own. Aim for 10/15 mins of activity. This is in addition to our daily exercise.

There is also an optional PE skills lesson here which will help to develop balance, agility and coordination. See the powerpoint:
Optional PE skills lesson

Optional suggestion: The British Film Institute recommends this film as a feel good film My Neighbour Toroto and Common Sense Media say it is for 5+yrs.
