Reception Home Learning w/c 15/06/2020

We hope you enjoyed last week’s learning. We really love seeing all the photographs and observations of the children’s learning and hope that our feedback is helping you to support them. We are sorry we can’t comment on all of your observations but we do look at all of them and add them to your child’s learning profile.

This week we are continuing our theme of Journeys by looking at the story ‘Last stop on Market Street’ by Matt De La Pena. Click here to watch Mrs Browne read the story.

Please could you send us the following observations:

  • Writing – Sentences about a journey that you have been on.
  • Reading – An observation of your child reading so we can see how they are getting on with the Bug club online reading books. We have recently had some videos of children reading which is really great!
  • Maths –  Number bonds to 10 activity using egg box/container (Please see mathematics tasks below).
  • Another of your choice.

PSHE

As a school we have been reflecting on recent events about George Floyd. We believe it is important to celebrate and talk about different cultures and ethnicities. For this reason we have put our PSHE as our top priority this week.

Please listen to the story ‘Let’s Talk About Race’

Then click here to look at the powerpoint before sharing with your children. Use the questions to help you discuss  the book with your children in a way you feel most appropriate.

Phonics Tasks

Watch this week’s phonics lessons from the phonics hub: You can use your whiteboards for these activities.

  • Lesson 1 – oi

It’s great to see that lots of you are now using the Bug Club online reading books. Please remember to let us know how you are getting on and if you think the level of books available to you needs adjusting.

Story Time

Writing task

Our writing task this week is linked to the story ‘The Last Stop on Market Street ‘ by Matt de la Pena.  Please click here to hear Mrs Browne read the story.

In the story the little boy, CJ, goes on a bus journey with his Nana. We learn about the different people he sees on the bus and the things that he sees through the windows.

Please talk to your child about journeys that they have been on and can remember. Maybe on a bus or a train or an aeroplane.

Where did you go? Who were you with? What did you see through the windows?

  • Ask your child to write some sentences about one of these journeys. Use the ‘Everytime I write’ sheet in the shared folder to help them remember all the things that make a good sentence.
  • Finally ask your child to draw an illustration of the things that they saw on their journey.

Letter Formation

  • Find the letter formation activity sheet in the shared folder – this week we are practicing ai, air, ar

Find more fine motor support and activities in the shared folder.

Mathematics Tasks

  • Daily number games on Number Gym: Please login and click ‘Early Maths’. You will need to enter your personal login. Click here to see instructions to log onto Number Gym. Continue to explore the games we have previously signposted for you.
  • Writing numerals to 0-20.
  • Count to 100 and sing along to this video. Click here

You can do the following activities on a walk, in the car etc.

  • Daily counting to 20/Daily counting back from 20.
  • Daily 1 more/1 less to 20. (E.g. 1 more than 3 is __ / 1 less than 12 is __)

This week’s focus: Number bonds to 10

  • Use the ‘Part-part whole – number bonds to 10’ sheet in the shared folder as a guide for this activity (or you can work straight onto it if you prefer!). Make a part-part whole model. You can print the template in the shared folder or use masking tape in the floor, hoops and straws etc. Put 10 items (toys, animals, pasta) in the ‘whole’. Ask your child to split the 10 items into two ‘parts’. Encourage them to record it in any way they like. You might like them to use the sheet to record their findings. They should be able to find 6 ways to split 10!
  • Print the ‘Numicon cut outs’ in the shared folder.  Put the ‘ten’ plate (blue) down first. On top, add another plate/number. Ask your child if they can find the missing plate/number to make 10, covering the blue plate (See picture below). Complete the ‘Numicon number bonds to 10’ sheet from the shared folder. Your child can use the cut out Numicon pieces to work out the answers.
  • Please send us an observation of this activity: Find an egg box or other container with 10 holes in. Find 2 different items to put in the egg box. Fill all the holes with the 2 items to create number bonds to 10 (See picture below). Ask your child to write the number sentences to match what is in their egg box/container. Challenge: Can your child write a subtraction number sentence using the same 3 numbers? E.g. Addition: 8 + 2 = 10 Subtraction: 10 – 2 = 8 or 10 – 8 = 2.
  • Find and complete the ‘WRM – number bonds to 10’ sheet in the shared folder. To support your child while doing the sheet, they could use the ‘Bus tens frame’ and ‘Counter cut outs’ in the shared folder. The sheet has different activities such as bar models, number sentences, tens frames and problem solving questions (your child might need some help to read the instructions!). At the end it asks you to give your friend some cubes, you can use any household item for this activity.
  • Continue to practice quick recall of number bonds to 10 with your child.  E.g. 7 and what makes 10? 4 and what makes 10? You can do this on a walk or in the car!

Mathematics suggestions

  • You could use blocks of lego to work out number bonds to 10 (in the same way you used the Numicon cut out pieces above). See picture below.
  • Complete the sheet ‘Ladybirds – number bonds to 10’ in the shared folder. You can draw on the dots and complete the number sentence so that each ladybird has 10 spots!
  • Click here to play a number bonds to 10 game. Once you have found the correct pipe, click the wheel for the next question.
  • Print, colour in and complete the ‘Number bonds jigsaw’ in the shared folder.
  • Complete the ‘Tens frames and number sentences’ sheet in the shared folder.
  • Continue to watch your beanstalks grow and compare them to other plants. Remember to use the language taller, tallest, tall, shortest, shorter, short.
  • Continue to count in 5’s and 10’s.

Understanding the World

  • We are thinking about the story ‘Last Stop on Market Street’ this week. In the story we saw how the little boy went on a bus journey. On his bus journey he experienced lots of different sights and smells. We thought this would be a great time to explore our senses and describe them in different ways.

Making your own senses boxes:

  • Create different boxes/jars to explore the use of taste, smell, texture, sounds. The different boxes/jars may include pine cones, oranges, spices, chocolate, dried pasta (to rattle) or anything you can find from around your house.
  • Can you write down or draw the materials you have used on separate pieces of paper, then match the boxes/jars to the right picture or word.

Suggestions

  • If you have been to a different country can you talk about the culture of that country, think about the things that may be different to England.
  • In our shared folder have a go at our ‘Last Stop on Market street’ senses sheet , thinking about your favourite smells, sights, tastes, sounds or textures.
  • Think about the world we live in, does everyone live in a house like you? Think about the different houses you may get in different countries. You may also like to talk about different clothing you might see in different countries and why.
  • Can you make a recipe from a different country?

Expressive Arts and Design

As mentioned above we are focusing the story ‘Last Stop on Market Street’. We want you to really engage with thinking about cultures around the world. Listen to ‘Putumayo kids presents- kids world party’ how does this music make you feel? Can you move in rhythm to this music? Maybe you have some instruments /or any homemade instruments to play along with the music.

  • Can you make a collage of your journey from your writing task above, or any other journey you have been on. Think about the textures and describe them. How did that journey make you feel?
  • Don’t forget Sunday the 21 of June is Father’s Day, you may like to draw a picture of your Dad and make a card to say thank-you to him for all the things he does for you.

Physical Development

  • Continue with Joe Wicks daily P.E sessions daily  live at 9am. These can also be accessed at any time during the day on YouTube.
  • Learn a new game that you can play with the people in your household. This is a great opportunity to spend some time outside. Here is a game everyone can be involved with:

Frisbee Fun

-How far can you throw it? How many times can you and family/friends pass it before it drops

Have you got good aim?

-Get a bucket and see if you can throw a ball into it. Keep moving the bucket further away… can you still get the ball in?

  • Can you beat Miss Quinn in another challenge? She was able to do 15 sit ups in one minute- Can your child beat this? See if you can improve on this each time.
  • Take part in a yoga class, using cosmic kids. Click here for one about ‘Colonel Crockles the Crocodile’
  • Listen to BBC Let’s move dance routines; you can involve other members of your household with this. Click here for Part one: ‘Time for Change, Greedy Zebra’’
