Term 3 Week 1

English

We are starting our Space topic with an exciting new text; “Look Up!” by Nathan Bryon.

The story is about a girl called Rocket, who loves to look up and enjoy the World. She hopes to one day go to space like her hero Mae Jemison, who we will be learning more about in the coming weeks.

We will begin by building up our vocabulary around the subject of ‘looking up’ and by thinking about why we should take an interest in the world around us. We will use our vocabulary to write sentences about the importance of curiosity and looking up, trying to remember our full stops and capital letters in every sentence. At the end of the week we are going for a Look Up Walk around the school grounds, where the children will be challenged to make use of their five senses to experience the outside world as fully as possible. Back in the classroom, we will write an extended piece of work about our experiences.

Maths

In the week before the Christmas holidays, we started a block of learning about statistics. The children learnt how to use a tally chart and record information in tally charts. They then used these to create pictograms and interpret information. This week, we are continuing to learn about pictograms. The children will be drawing and interpreting pictograms where the symbols represent 2, 5 or 10 items. As you can see from the pictograms below, children will need to be able to halve 2 and 10 and understand this when it is represented as half an object.

The children will be introduced to block diagrams and will ask and answer questions using their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

Topic

In PSHE this week we are going to be thinking about goals and dreams we have and how we can work hard to achieve these. We will be coming up with some realistic goals together and supporting each other to work towards these.

In R.E we are thinking about people who inspire us and what it is about them that inspires us? We will be linking this to inspiring figures in religion.
