Year 2 Updates and Upcoming Learning – Friday 5th March 2021

We are really looking forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 8th March.

Class 7 and 9 will start at 8:45 and finish at 3:15. Class 8 will start at 9:00 and finish at 3:30.

We are also looking forward to speaking to you on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Parents’ Evenings. Please book an appointment if you haven’t already.

Over the first couple of weeks in school, we are going to be focusing on supporting the children’s wellbeing and rebuilding peer relationships. We will also be celebrating the learning children have completed remotely and carrying out low key assessments to inform our future planning.

English

The week, we will use our research about the Mars rover landing to create an amazing poster! We’ll start off by sharing and bringing together our research. We will work in teams to turn the notes into really high quality sentences for a class poster. We will then make our own posters.

We’ve missed out on lots of time together since Christmas so reading time will be used for sharing books with our friends and teachers, and for whole class reading activities.

Maths

In maths this week we will continue our learning about shapes, concentrating on 3D shapes.

We will do lots of practical investigations and practise counting faces, edges and vertices on different 3D shapes. We will also practise spotting 3D shapes in real life, sorting 3D shapes in different ways and making patterns.

Science/Geography

We are continuing with our inquiry question: what would a planet need to look like for a hedgehog to survive?

This week, we will recap what we have learnt about habitats and we will consider climates, asking questions like; what climate would best support a woodland habitat? What food would we need to grow in this habitat? Does the climate support this type of food growing? Children will use resources like atlases and information books collaboratively to answer some of those questions.

PSHE

To support the transition back to school we will be looking at some friendship topics in our PSHE sessions. We will be discussing trust and what this means and playing games which rely on trust in the classroom. We will also be looking at who are trusted people that we can turn to for help in our families, our school and the local community.

RE

The main focus of our RE lesson will be about l one of Jesus’ parables called ‘The Camel through the Eye of a Needle’. The children will retell this story to their peers and as a class we will discuss that Christians believe Jesus is God’s son. We will be encouraging the children to use religious vocabulary such as parable, Kingdom of Heaven, Grace, mercy,  faith, trust.
