Reception – Term 2, Week 2

Noticeboard

  • Thank you for submitting the week 1 observation request of your child doing something they are good at. It was lovely to share these with your children and the class in school. Please see below to find out about this weeks ‘Communication and Language’ observation request.
  • Please click here to see the ‘Follow up from the Reception Curriculum evening’ blog post.
  • Author Visit – We are very lucky to have an author visiting us in Week 2. Information was sent out about this in Term 1. Click this LINK to an order form and more information if you have not received it. All replies and monies need to be returned to school by Monday 8th November.
  • This term, we are inviting parents to contribute to their child’s learning diary. Each week, we will request an observation. Please read the weekly learning to find out which area of learning we would like you to contribute to. This week, we are asking you to contribute to ‘PSED’ by taking a photo or recording a short clip of your child doing something they are good at and submit it as an observation on Evidence Me. Click here to see the Parents Guide from Evidence Me.
  • When using the Bug Club books, please remember to click the ‘X’ to close the book when your child has read it, otherwise teachers cannot see that it has been read.
  • Please remember to read the phonetically decodable reading book with your child everyday. Reading the same book daily for several days helps to develop fluency and embed phonic knowledge and skills. Please write a positive comment about your child’s reading in their log book everyday. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s. Please remember to return your child’s books every Monday as they will swap them for new ones on Mondays.

Celebrations

The children have really enjoyed learning about the ELLI tortoise so far and have made some wonderful collage tortoises. A highlight from Week 1, for both teachers and children, was open morning/afternoon. We were so pleased to have invited you into our classrooms so that you can see where your child is learning and explore the environment with them. We hope you enjoyed looking at their first few pieces of Writing and Handwriting in their books too.

Learning diary contribution – Evidence Me

Please record a short clip of your child retelling a story (fiction or a real life experience) and submit it as an observation on Evidence Me.

This week, we will be continuing to learning about the ELLI Tortoise. We will be reading ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ and be thinking about how the tortoise persevered throughout the race. The children will be able to relate to the tortoise’s perseverance as they will find learning difficult at points and will need to use perseverance to continue their learning journey.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Continuing our ‘Celebrating Difference’, we will be thinking about how being different makes us all special.

We will continue to think about the ELLI tortoise characteristics of perseverance and resilience in our learning.

Communication and Language

We will be continually re-reading the story ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ and use vocabulary learnt in the book. This will build up familiarity and understanding. We will be encouraging children to retell the story to one another. You could ask your child to retell the story to you at home too. Each week, we will have a word of the week to learn about. This week’s word is ‘perseverance’.

Word of the week: perseverance

Please record a short clip of your child retelling a story (fiction or a real life experience) and submit it as an observation on Evidence Me.  Click here to see the Parents Guide from Evidence Me.

Physical Development

We will be building on last week’s skills as we turn while jumping a quarter and half way round. In Write Dance we will be exploring circles, eights and clover shapes with our whole bodies.

Literacy

Phonics:

This week we will be learning the new phonemes l, ll, ss.

Handwriting:

This week, the children will be practising the formation of d, g and e.

Please support your child at home to practise the letter formation of s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f, l. Click here to see the correct formation of the letters.

Reading:

This week we will continue to read with your child 1:1 and in small group read sessions. Please continue to read with your child every day to improve their fluency with a text and don’t forget to record this in your child’s reading record.

Please note: We will be continuing to change books once a week but please bring your child’s book and bag everyday for 1:1 reading sessions.

Writing:

This week we will be using our class story ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ to write a list of the animals in the story e.g. hen cat, pig, duck, dog.

Mathematics

In Maths this week, we will be learning about 2D shapes. The children will be focusing on circles and triangles. They will compose and decompose circles and triangles to support them to recognise that shapes can have other shapes within them. Each class will make a firework piece of art and use different shapes to make rockets. Alongside this, we will be continually revisiting numbers 1 to 5.

We encourage you to support your child’s shape learning at home, by pointing out shapes in the environment.

Understanding the World

We will be learning about tortoises to support our ELLI learning. We will continue to be kindly curious and ask questions as our friends share the All About Me box. We will be thinking about our journeys as we grow and wondering if grownups went to school.

Religion and Worldviews

This week, we will be talking about feelings of joy, peace and wonder, and thinking of different things which might make us feel these emotions.

Expressive Arts and Design

This week we will be using musical instruments to follow the story ‘The Little Acorn’ and think about using the instruments to make loud and quiet noises. We will also be thinking about Bonfire Night and making our own firework pictures outside using different shapes.
