Year 1 News – Term 1 Week 5

A busy and fun filled week for Year 1 learners!!

Following on from our WOW day last week, celebrating our new topic “being me” we have been thinking about belonging… what groups of people, what clubs and communities we are a part of and how they make a difference and positively influence our lives. We produced some beautiful pictures of ourselves with these people as part of our topic tasks this week. As part of our science learning, we looked at the 5 senses and identified how they are useful and what things we could see hear/touch/smell taste using them.

In phonics, we have been recapping sounds we already know and using our whiteboards to write them down to work on our letter formation at the same time. We learnt what a double constant was and came up with lists of words that contained them, before putting them into silly sentences!! I.e “the diZZy duCK went quaCK and feLL into the doCK”.

In Maths, we discussed “part-part-whole” and thinking about how numbers can be split into two parts. We looked at this visually in the form of a cherry stem diagram and had a go ourselves practically using counters, before drawing some into our workbooks. We concentrated on numbers 1-10. We used warm ups and plenaries as an opportunity to consolidate last week’s learning, finding one more and one less using numbers 0-20 and counting forwards and backwards from any given number from 0-20.
