Year 1 News- Term 1 Week 8

This week in year 1 we have been on our Trip to St Peters Church to learn a little bit more about what being catholic means and the sorts of events and things that happen within the church community. Year one really impressed Mark with our pre-planned questions about his role, the types of events and times special times of year for the church that we might celebrate, what certain objects and signs symbolised and we sat beautifully listening to his answers! We all enjoyed taking part in a ‘church hunt’ where we had to uncover and count how many crosses and keys we could find, as well as completing a map. It was a lovely morning and the children made all the Teachers and grown-ups accompanying very proud! Huge Thank you to our parent helpers also. We hoped you enjoyed the morning as much as we did!

In maths learning this week we have been consolidating our learning of part- part whole and combining with our addition and subtraction number sentence learning from last week to scribe addition and subtraction number sentences to go with our cherry stem diagrams. We have been focusing on the language we can use to tell these ‘number stories’ e.g, ‘first I had 5, then I added 3, now I have 8’ for the number sentence 5+3=8 and ‘first I had 8, then I subtracted 3, now I have 5’. We have been focusing on our number facts to 5 and have been working really hard at these beginning to recall them quickly during carpet times!

Our Topic learning last week around autumn has been incorporated into our English learning this week as we prepare for an autumnal half term. We have been thinking about what words and adjectives best describe autumn and creating a word bank around pictures. We have also written a postcard from a character of our choice surrounding our two books of the term ‘Beegu’ and ‘Lost and found’ from either the penguin or Beegu to their parents to tell them about their adventures, describe their experiences and feelings. We worked extremely hard to remember capital letters and full stops and produced some beautiful pieces of writing impressing our teachers!!

In PSHE this week we are concluding our learning around our termly focus ‘being me’ and are following on from last week’s learning, focusing on how we can make the right choices in school referencing our Henleaze Infants five school rules (Act kindly, Move calmly, Listen carefully, Do your best, Take care of our school). We took part in a game where we divided into 5 groups per class, and were secretly allocated a school rule. We worked together like team bee’s to make a freeze frame to illustrate that behaviour. We then shared our freeze frame with the class who had top guess what behaviour we were representing. We had fantastic fun doing this and acted sensibly in our demonstrations!

We hope you all have a wonderful half term and a well-deserved break for all the children who have worked incredibly hard this term. Look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday the 5th of November for the beginning of term 2.
