Reception – Term 4, Week 3

Henleaze Infant and Junior Schools are collaborating on Wednesday 6th March to mark this year’s World Book Day. To celebrate this day which acknowledges the importance of reading for pleasure, we have some exciting events for you to join in with:

  • Dress up as your favourite book character!
  • Join in for Mrs Wood’s Wake and Shake from 8.30am on the Infant playground (please note this is weather permitting and all children MUST be accompanied by an adult and then taken to their classrooms for the usual 8.45am start time). Juniors welcome too!
  • Bring in a printed photo of you ‘Reading Your Way. This could be reading a favourite book or reading in a favourite place, or perhaps reading whilst eating your favourite snack? It’s up to you how you show ‘Reading Your Way’.
  • Take home your World Book Day book token to redeem a book from many high street stores and supermarkets.

  • Thank you for attending parents evening. We enjoyed meeting you and discussing the progress your children have made. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns that you didn’t get time to ask.
  • Wednesday 6th March – World Book Day. Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character. Information is above.
  • Friday 15th March – Red nose day – more info on dressing up to follow
  • Please alert your child’s class teacher if your child finishes one side of their bookmark so that they can receive their first certificate in assembly. You can find information on our reading incentive by clicking here
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book. Please make sure the reading books come into school each day with your child.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

A particular highlight of our week has been building igloos. The children worked in their colour groups to build igloos using model magic. We were impressed with the children using their ‘teamwork bee’ and ‘creative unicorn’ skills.

Daisy – Polina

Buttercup – Lana

The focus this week is DT. We are thinking about being healthy in PSHE, so this week, we would like your child to support you to make a healthy balanced meal or snack at home. We will be sharing the photos on Tapestry in class and asking your child to explain what they did and why it is healthy.

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week, we will be thinking about healthy foods.  The children will be learning which foods are healthy and not  so healthy to help them to make healthy eating  choices.

Communication and Language

Book of the week: The Emperor’s Egg by Martin Jenkins and Jane Chapman

This week, we will be using the helicopter stories technique to allow the children to invent their own stories for the class to act out together.

We will also be pre-teaching some of the vocabulary we will come across next week in our new key text “Handa’s Surprise” eg avocado, guava, mango, passionfruit

We always encourage the children to engage in story times and non-fiction books in these ways:

Listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding.

Ask questions to find out more and to check they understand what is being said.

Articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences.

Connect one idea or action to another using a range of connectives.

Describe some events in detail.

Word of the Week: fiction

Physical Development

We will continue to learn about jumping. The children will jump off equipment, making sure they bend their knees and have a soft landing.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be learning how to blend the adjacent consonants: mp, nd, nk, nt

We will learn the common exception words: like,   do

And revisit the common exception words: so,  was, you

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Maths

This week, we will  continue to learn number bonds to 10, think about odd and even numbers and exploring doubles to 10.

Understanding the World

We will be thinking about explorers and exploring the globe this week. There will be a history focus and the children will be learning about how exploring has changed over time.

Religion and Worldviews

Continuing our exploration of the question, “Why are some times special?” We will be learning about the Judeo-Christian story of Passover and linking it with Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends.

We will be continuing with our music unit of Handa’s surprise. This week, the children will be trying to maintain a pulse within a group performance and practise rehearsing as a group.
