Year 1 News- Term 3- Week 3

In English this week we have completed our learning on our book ‘Dinosaurs and all that rubbish’ by writing superb retells of our own and planning them first, thinking about phrases of speech, details and adjectives we would use. Year 1 impressed their teachers with all of the language they absorbed and the fantastic individual twists the children incorporated into their stories. We also spotted lots of children remember their use of capital letters and full stops.. well done children! We then went on to explore and find facts about hot and cold countries using an atlas in preparation for our wow day Friday.

This week we are learning alternate sounds for ear (in hear) including ‘eer’ in ‘deer’, and ‘ere’ in ‘here’. Please refer to your children’s sounds and words books for our words we are learning to read and spell this week, many of which contain these sounds.

In our maths learning we have been taking our addition learning one step further by looking at three part addition, applying our number bond knowledge to 10 to find the most efficient way of working out the number sentence, spotting the links. E.g 3+7+4 – spotting 3+7 as the number bonds to 10 and then counting on in our heads, using a number line or using counters. Please watch ’10 again’ number bonds video (numberjacks) on youtube or iplayer to reinforce this learning.

On Friday this week we had our WOW Day to celebrate our topic, Our World! We had a busy day making flags, recording what we had learnt about our world so far and working together to create art work from the book ‘Dinosaurs and all the Rubbish’. We also enjoyed a visit from the Explorer Dome and learnt about different parts of the world including deserts, rainforests and cold places. Our highlights included star gazing in the desert, spotting camouflaged animals and a giant cloud of dry ice that filled the dome!

In RE this week we have learnt about Chinese New Year, being it year of the rat. We have made decorations and have had a go at writing and speaking in Chinese also! In PSHE we continued to stick with our topic of celebrating goals and dreams thinking about ways in which we can achieve together, how we can work well with partners and as part of a team.
