Reception – Term 3, Week 2

Noticeboard

  • Friday, 12th January, 9am – Parent Information Meeting – Writing – How we and you can support your child with learning to write. This academic year, we as a school are completing a project about improving our writing skills with a concentration on formation and handwriting and spelling. The meeting will start with EYFS and all the way to Year 2 so lots of important information for all parents. There is more information on the back of your child’s calendar that they will be bringing home.
  • Please alert your child’s class teacher if your child finishes one side of their bookmark so that they can receive their first certificate in assembly. You can find information on our reading incentive by clicking here
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Children need to bring their book bag into school every day. If they do not have it on a Monday, they will not be able to have a new reading book. Please make sure the reading books come into school each day with your child.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

Celebrations

It was lovely to welcome the children back into class this week and we were very impressed with how well they settled back into the school routine. The children really enjoyed exploring the new role play areas based on places they might see in the community. In Buttercup class there is a Baby Clinic and in Daisy class there is a Veterinary Practice.

Tapestry – Observation request

The focus this week is Understanding the World.

We would love to see a photo of a place which is special to your child – this could even be their own bedroom at home, but could include holiday places, birthday party venues or a church, mosque, temple or synagogue.

You can also send us any moments that you feel are significant in your child’s learning or want to share with your child’s class teachers.

This week’s learning

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week we are focusing on times when children didn’t give up. We will be thinking about resilience and perseverance just like the stickability tortoise shows us. We will be using texts like ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ and ‘The Jungle Run’ to support the learning of perseverance.

Communication and Language

Quality text this week is Henry’s Map by David Elliott

We always encourage the children to engage in story times and non-fiction books in theses ways:

Listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding.

Ask questions to find out more and to check they understand what is being said.

Articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences.

Connect one idea or action to another using a range of connectives.

Describe some events in detail.

Word of the Week: capacity

Physical Development

We will be starting our gymnastics syllabus in PE this week. Developing skills like moving our bodies to perform different shapes.

In Write Dance we are moving on to the story of The Robot, this encourages us to draw with straight lines and angles which are similar to the representation of the numeral 4.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be mastering the graphemes/ phonemes: y, z, zz, qu

And the common exception words: we, be

We will practise blending phonemes to read, and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Writing:  We will be using our phonics learning to write labels for a map of the classroom.

Maths

We will be exploring and comparing capacity this week. We will also be learning about numbers 6, 7 and 8. The children will be finding groups of 6, 7 and 8, as well as representing them.

Understanding the World

We are focusing on map skills this term, we will be using the key text Henry’s Map to introduce map skills in a meaningful way and asking the children to create their own map of either a space they know – bedroom, classroom, school or journey to school, or if they wish they can create a make believe map.

Religion and Worldviews

We will begin our big question for term 3 and 4: “Why are some times special?” with a discussion of special places people go to celebrate, including places of worship.

Expressive Arts and Design

We will be looking at different landscapes, thinking about the landscapes we have around the school and creating a landscape picture of our own.
