Reception – Term 3, Week 5

Noticeboard

  • It would be really helpful if the children could wear their wellies into school on a Monday morning, ready for running the Monday Mile. Please make sure they have their school shoes in their bag.
  • Every child needs to bring their book, book bag and reading record into school everyday.
  • Click here to find out about our whole school reading incentive called Read for the Stars.
  • Phonics and letter formation – We are really pleased to be able to share this document with you (click here). The document shows you the Phase 2 phonemes with a description of the corresponding action, the correct letter formation and the image children will associate with the phoneme. The children have been learning these phonemes in their Phonics lessons, so should already be familiar with them. Please use this document to support your child’s letter formation and use the ‘script’ that we use in school to ensure consistency.
  • Please remember that you can use the Bug Club books alongside your child’s reading book.
  • Please remember to read the phonetically decodable reading book with your child everyday. Reading the same book daily for several days helps to develop fluency and embed phonic knowledge and skills. You can click here to access the blog post about reading at Henleaze Infant School and click here to view some of the FAQ’s.

Celebrations

Congratulations to the children who have completed the first side of their ‘Read for the Stars’ bookmark this week. Please alert your child’s class teacher if your child has completed one side of their bookmark. Click here to find out about our whole school reading incentive called Read for the Stars.

This week, the children have loved learning about the communities they are in. The have been using the role play resources outside to reenact scenes they have observed in their local communities. The children have written a list of places in their local community too using their knowledge of phonics e.g. church, park, bank.

Evidence Me – Observation Request

Maths – You have two choices this week, or you may choose to do both!

  1. Download the 1-Minute Maths app and ask your child to play the subitising games. You were sent an email about this on Thursday. The app is totally free and  it’s available for use on Apple and Android devices. Take a photo of your child playing the game and submit it as an observation.
  2. Choose at least 3 objects from your house and order them from shortest to longest. Take a photo of the items in the correct order and submit it as an observation on Evidence Me.

Please click here to view the Evidence Me parents guide.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This week, we will be thinking about the different jobs that adults do, and making the link between what we learn now and jobs we might like to do when we are older.

Communication and Language

This week, we will be introducing the children to ‘Zog and the Doctors’. This will be our key text until the end of the term. The children will get to know this story really well and we will be defining the vocabulary in the book. The children will answer comprehension questions about the story too. Alongside this, we will continue to share and talk about the Evidence Me observations you send in and the children will have lots of opportunities to talk and learn new words in the class role play areas.

Word of the week: Occupation

Physical Development

We will be perfecting balance skills as we take up the challenge to balance, on tiptoe for ten seconds – on and off of equipment in PE. In Write Dance we will be drawing to link both sides of the brain, using both hands at the same time.

Literacy

Please continue to use the phonics grid with your child to practice all the phonemes we have learnt so far. We suggest doing this alongside their daily reading.  If your child has misplaced the grid, click here to access it.

This week we will be mastering previously learnt phonemes. This week we will focus on y, z, zz, qu.

Please support your child at home to practise their letter formation. Click here to see the correct letter formation and ‘script’ we use in school to support children to form their letters. This will ensure consistency between home and school.

This week we will continue to read with your child either 1:1 or in a small guided reading session. Please continue to read with your child every day to improve their fluency with a text. Ask your child questions about the characters, what they think might happen next and discuss/ explain what they think is happening in the pictures.

Writing –This week we will writing a list of jobs we have in our community e.g. vet, doctor, butcher, nurse, dentist etc

Maths

In Maths this week, the children will be making pairs. They will build on their earlier work on matching to make and find pairs. We will also be exploring length and height. Each class will be taking part in an investigation to compare the length of their shoes to find out who has the longest and shortest shoes.

Understanding the World

We will be thinking about technology and linking it with our community work. We will be talking about how technology is used in helpful ways in different jobs. We will be prompting children to ask at home What happened before technology was invented?

Religion and Worldviews

Chinese New Year is on 1st February, 2022, so this week we will learn about some of the ways it is celebrated, and in Art, we are going to make our own dragon masks. We will also watch some clips of Chinese dragon dances, and have a go at dancing to the music.
