Year 2 News – Term 4, Week 2

First of all a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for parents’ evenings. Please do set up an appointment with us if you were not able to make it.

Our text for this week was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We focused on the experience of entering the chocolate room and the different sensations that we might encounter. To prepare us for writing we had a chocolate tasting session! The children used their five senses to think about what they could see, hear, touch, smell and taste. We used a special planning form to map out their ideas before writing their own descriptive paragraph.

We had such a wonderful day on World Book Day! There was a brilliant array of costumes and we loved hearing about the children’s favourite books. The Great Book Swap was very exciting and we hope everyone enjoyed choosing and investigating a lovely new book. We also did some expressive art work as part of our book day celebrations. Continuing our learning about the Chocolate Room – children used a variety of materials to create giant sweets and chocolates.

In maths our focus has been on telling the time. In Year 2, children learn to tell the time to the hour, half past and quarter past/to. This is a brilliant thing to practise at home and we suggest having analogue clocks in family rooms, such as the dining room, and in children’s bedrooms. If your child is confident with these times they can practise reading the time to 5 minute intervals.

In science this week we conducted an experiment using ice to find the warmest place in the classroom. We talked about the importance of setting up a fair test and made predictions about where in the classroom ice would melt the fastest. We made careful observations of our ice at two minute intervals to see if our predictions were accurate.

Looking ahead to next week, Friday 13th March will be our Sport Relief day. Children may come to school in clothes suitable for sport and will take part in fitness challenges to help raise awareness and money for Sport Relief. An email with more details will follow.
