Year 2 – Term 4, Week 4

Well done for a fantastic first week back at school! We are so impressed with how everyone has settled in and we have had lots of fun learning together.

This Friday (19th) is RED NOSE DAY and we are inviting your child to dress in something red and bring in a donation.

Thank you for the brilliant turn out at parents’ evenings; we really enjoyed catching up with you all.

English

Our writing this week will be based on the wonderful book ‘Hidden Figures’, by Margot Lee Shetterly. It is about four black women and their role in the space race.

We’ll start by thinking about the place of black women in early 20th century America and start building up our vocabulary about this subject.

Next we will begin the story of Dorothy Vaughan and think of questions we would like to answer. Once we have written our questions we will take turns to be Dororthy Vaughan and have a go at answering some of the questions.

We will move onto Mary Jackson next. Mary had to make a speech to a judge to convince him to allow her to attend classes at a segregated school. We are going to write our own persuasive speeches (and will have a go at delivering them too)! We will try using different persuasive starters on command sentences to convince the judge that changes need to be made.

Maths

This week we are going to do a bit of recap of our work on fractions and shape. Children will have a go at answering some questions independently to demonstrate their understanding of these topics.

They will also have the chance to work with friends to complete some challenges involving fractions and shapes.

Science/Geography

This week we are continuing with our enquiry question: “What does a planet need to look like for a hedgehog to survive?”.

We will continue to learn about habitats, with a particular focus on micro habitats. Where would a hedgehog be able to find plenty of food?

We will think about the habitat in the school grounds and explore these areas. We will collect data about the mini-beasts we find in different micro habitats around the school.

PSHE

Our current PSHE focus is on friendship. This week we will be thinking about things that could cause conflicts with friends and learn about how these conflicts can be resolved.

RE

RE this week is all about Easter and what it means to Christians. We will learn about the Easter story and have a go at sequencing the events.
